Body Mass Index (BMI) Defined

A measure to gauge total body fat which takes into account a person's weight and height. For adults, a BMI of 30 or more is considered obese. For children, proper determination of BMI depends on additional factors. The higher the BMI, the greater the risk of developing additional health problems.See also: Percentiles for body mass index in U.S. children 5 to 17 years of age.

Obesity Rate on the Rise: Wisconsin 25th

Washington, D.C., July 1, 2009 - Wisconsin has the 25th highest rate of adult obesity in the nation, at 26.0 percent and the 12th lowest of overweight youths (ages 10-17) at 27.9 percent, according to a new report by Trust for America's Health (TFAH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF).

Adult obesity rates increased in 23 states and did not decrease in a single state in the past year, according to F as in Fat: How Obesity Policies Are Failing in America 2009, a report released today by the Trust for America's Health (TFAH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). In addition, the percentage of obese or overweight children is at or above 30 percent in 30 states.
