A University of Virginia medical researcher from the Middle East has been placed on leave without pay after the federal government denied his green-card application and revoked his work authorization. Dr. Alaa Awad, a 35-year-old kidney-disease expert, believes his application to continue his work in the U.S. was rejected because he is a Muslim and an Egyptian.
