Discovery May Provide New Treatments For Alcohol Dependence
Published July 4, 2009, 10:22 pm, Science Daily
Researchers have discovered a new brain mechanism involved in alcohol addiction involving the stomach hormone ghrelin. When ghrelin's actions in the brain are blocked, alcohol's effects on the reward system are reduced. It is an important discovery that could lead to new therapies for addictions such as alcohol dependence.

What"™s checking spread of swine flu
Published July 4, 2009, 2:45 pm, The Telegraph
New Delhi, July 4: The new H1N1 virus has not spread like wildfire despite opportunities because its genetic makeup allows only inefficient handshakes with the gateways to the human respiratory tract, scientists have said.

- Human Brains Make Their Own 'Marijuana': U.S. and Brazilian scientists have discovered that the brain manufactures proteins that act like marijuana at specific receptors in the brain itself (THC receptors). This discovery may lead to new marijuana-like drugs for managing pain, stimulating appetite, and preventing marijuana abuse.

- Electromagneti c receptors in humans? « Brains Lab: Using EEG, Marino et al evaluated the likelihood of a magnetic stimuli evoking a post-transduct ion action potential in ten human subjects. Even with only a 10 ms rise time and a 0.2 ms fall time, field potentials during the onset of the magnetic field occured 100% of the time, and field potentials in the offest of the magnetic field occured 60% of the time. They were able to rule out the possibility that the field potentials resulted from interactions between the field and the scalp electrodes based on other preliminary tests. The fact that the receptor was able to detect such a rapid change (0.2 ms) suggests that the signal transduction process may indeed be initiated by a mechanical force. So although their location has not been pinpointed, it appears that humans also have electromagneti c receptors and that they act through a phylogenetical ly conserved mechanism.

- Effects of stress throughout the lifespan on the brain, behaviour and cognition: Chronic exposure to stress hormones, whether it occurs during the prenatal period, infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood or aging, has an impact on brain structures involved in cognition and mental health. However, the specific effects on the brain, behaviour and cognition emerge as a function of the timing and the duration of the exposure, and some also depend on the interaction between gene effects and previous exposure to environmental adversity.
